Why you wish: I wish because of Bella and Maci. From birth, both sisters had been diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia, therefore; they were constantly gone in Rochester receiving treatment. Once each sister had received their bone marrow, our family had made the trip to see our family friends at the Ronald McDonald house. It was there that I realized the vast difference in their life from mine as a child. It was in those hallways that I began the need to make a difference in these young children’s lives, and I did so by volunteering with the Make-A-Wish foundation. During my time with this student organization, I have personally witnessed three other children receive wishes as well as Bella and Maci. By volunteering a little bit of my time, I was able to give a sliver of time missed because of hospital beds back to the children that had given it their all to fight their life-threatening illness.

If you could have 1 wish: If I had one wish, I would backpack through New Zealand.

Why you wish: I love the vision that Wishmakers has. As a future medical professional, I know I will be helping kids with terminal illnesses. Seeing the impact that Wishmakers has on a child’s life only encourages my passion to help kids in the future. It is my mission to expand the medical community in going beyond the textbook and create innovative treatments for children we help. As for now, without a medical degree, I know this is the best way that I can help these children and make an impact on their lives. Wishmakers has helped me realize my potential to make a lasting impact on children and I hope to share that with other students at the University of Northern Iowa.

If you could have 1 wish: I would travel around southeast Asia. The culture is so unique and different from Western cultures and I believe we have a lot to learn from their practices. I thoroughly enjoy talking to individuals with different backgrounds and I think this would be a great opportunity to do so.

Why you wish: I wish for kids and families who have forgotten what it feels like to be spoiled. These kiddos and their families constantly live in a state of concern and worry for their loved one(s). I wish to help each of them forget about those worries and spend time together, being treated as the bravest people, because they truly are. I wish to remind them that they are not alone.

If you could have one wish: If I could have one wish, I would wish to travel with my whole family to Canada and visit Niagara Falls. My family loves to hike and bike and explore the outdoors together and I think this would be an amazing experience.

Why you Wish: I wish for the kids who are fighting a battle of their own, who have experienced the unthinkable, and for those who have had their “typical” childhood privileges revoked. For kids to have experienced so much at such a young age, they should be able to have their wishes and dreams come true. To know that I am making a difference in a child’s life is what keeps me going and motivated to do more. It means a lot knowing that based on my actions, along with my other committee members, that we are making a difference in a child’s life. That our actions lead to a child living in the moment and forgetting the past.

If you could have 1 Wish: If I could have one wish I would want there to be a cure to all diseases, illnesses, and other life-altering medical conditions.

Why you wish: I wish because these kids deserve to have a glimmer of hope in their life. The children fighting these life threatening illnesses are going through such hard times, and having the ability to give them a wish can make such a difference in their life. Being a part of this organization gives me the ability to try and help these children, where I can possibly make a positive impact on their life.

If you could have 1 wish: I would wish to go to Europe. It would be amazing to travel to a bunch of beautiful, historical cities, and be immersed in such amazing cultures.

Lauren Clingman

Position: Secretary

Major: Finance & Real Estate

Graduation Year: 2020

Why you wish: I wish for the kids that don’t know a life different from hospitals, treatments, and needles. I wish for the kids that have the best attitudes, when they are fighting the toughest fight. I wish for them to enjoy an escape from their reality and fulfill a dream!

If you could have one wish: If I could have one wish, I would love to travel to Thailand.

Why you wish: I wish to ensure that all children can have the same opportunities, especially those facing a new challenge every day. I want kids to be able to simply do that – be kids!! Those who have experienced the unthinkable are the ones who deserve the best, ultimately pushing me to provide other kids with once in a lifetime opportunity.

If you could have one wish: If I could have one wish, I would travel to Australia! Australia is such an interesting place with so many different kinds of animals and things to see, I feel like it’s a must-see travel destination!

Lauren Henderson

Position: Assistant Director of Fundraising

Major: Public Relations

Grad Year: 2022

Why you wish: I value the idea of giving a child a wish that will resonate with them for a lifetime. After meeting the kids and seeing how strong they are for fighting their own battles, it inspires me to work harder and give them that wish that they deserve!

If you could have 1 wish: If I had on wish, I would travel to Europe and explore some of the most famous cities and all the history that it holds! I have always loved learning about history and being able to visit such a historical continent would be a dream come true (maybe even meet the Queen too)!

Sarah Gill

Position: Assistant Director of Events

Major: Business Administration/Management

Graduation Year: December of 2019

Why you Wish: I wish for the kids who have gone through more than others can imagine. They deserve to have a dream just like the rest of the world. To be able to have this opportunity and raise money for kids who have had tremendous struggles in their life is fulfilling. Just one wish can make a child’s dream come true and giving them the memories of that experience for the rest of their life.

If you could have one wish: I would bring my entire family on a weeklong trip to the Caribbean. I have always heard that the Caribbean region is beautiful and is an experience to never forget.  I have never been on a trip with my entire family and I also have never been to a tropical area. So why not kill two birds with one stone??!

Why you wish: I have always heard about the Make-a-Wish Foundation before I came to college and knew about some of the wishes that kids received. It was always cool to me how professional athletes and celebrities take the time out of their day to take the time to get to know these brave kids personally. One of my favorite parts about being part of Northern Iowa Wishmakers is that I am helping contribute to granting a wish for a child in need. Even though Make-a-Wish Iowa is a larger organization, I am grateful that I can help contribute to helping out kids in the Cedar Valley area while at UNI.

If you could have one wish: If I could have one wish, it would be to explore different countries in Europe.
